The Conference at Yalta: The Beginning of the Cold War
ThesisThe Government's responsibilities during the Cold war was to prevent communism from expanding while obtaining peace and protection for the United States and the USSR.

Origins of the Cold War As WWII came to an end, issues were far from over and a conference between world powers was inevitable. At this conference the U.S. was represented by President Roosevelt, Prime Minister of the United Nations Winston Churchill, and representing Russia was the Joseph Stalin. Together the leaders wrote up The Declaration of Liberated Europe. The declaration gave the right to the citizens to choose what Government they wanted their country to be run by.
Less than two weeks after the conference rumors got to President Roosevelt that the Soviets were pressuring the King of Romania to create a communist government. Immediately Churchill and Roosevelt called Stalin on violating the Declaration. The Soviets race to gain power over Europe continued and the tension mounted between them and the U.S. The concerns and goals of Germany were different from the U.S.. Germany Believed the best way to ensure safety was to control the countries between Germany and Russia while keeping Germany weak. On the other hand, the U.S. wanted to increase trade with other nations. The Soviets saw this as a lack of security and strongly apposed the idea. As tension grew between the two nations Roosevelt became deathly sick with Polio and past away leaving Vice President Truman with the issues. Truman was strongly against communism and made sure that Stalin knew it by enforcing the Declaration of Liberated Europe more than Roosevelt ever had. There was a second meeting held at Potsdam Germany. Both sides snapped. Stalin believed that Germany must pay reparations immediately, where Truman believed that they should let the economy raise before putting such harsh steps. Truman Came out with his way but behind him the Iron Curtain fell over most of Eastern Europe. The Cold war had begun..... |
P.E.R.S.I.A.N.
The early stages of the cold war were full of issues that all came together to create major conflicts that the U.S. Government was attempting to avoid.
Political:
Communism and Democracy are two different ideologies that from ignorance and stubbornness started the Cold War. Communism can also be called a socio economic structure (no social or economic classes). Where as Democracy believes in letting the Government be chosen by the people. Both the Soviets and the Americans were extremely bias towards their government and did not want anything to do with the other. The U.S. saw the Soviets violating the Declaration they realized just how powerful the Communists were. Both President Roosevelt and Truman had to slow the expansion of Communism before the Soviets could abuse the power.

Economic:
The plans that America wanted for the dwindling economic system were clashing with the soviets. The Americans believed in letting the people decide their own income and in letting the free market capitalist view of the economy play out. The Soviet were demanding reparations. The Soviets insisted on the view of making the Germans pay for the war they started. The Americans saw that the Germans could not afford it and wanted to let the Economy play itself out. The expansion of Communism would have encouraged the Reparations to pass.

Geographical:
The Soviets started to expand their empire and at the border was considered the Iron Curtain. The goal was to block out any western contact with Soviet Russia or any of their Satellite States. They succeeded for many years and took control of all the bordering countries. The U.S. was did not want this to happen because of the expanding empire but also because another war was on the was a strong possibility if the Soviets didn't fall back.

Historical Significance
The U.S. has been making baby steps towards becoming very involved in Europe affairs, by the time the cold war hit the triumphs and failures in the past led the government to stand up against the expansion of the communist government.
World Power:
The U.S. has had many foreign policies in our short run as a world power, but during the cold war We used the Roosevelt "Big Stick" idea. The idea is to maintain a strong military presence and fend off any threats. The Soviets plan was more like Albert J. Beveridge's Idea of Annexing countries while they are weak. The United states saw this as a threat and in some cases reacted to keep the Declaration of Liberated Europe.

Progressive Era:
The Progressive Era caused many monopolies to grow. Big Businesses were trading with other countries not just within America. The businesses needed not only got huge income from those countries but the countries themselves also got money. When the Soviets wanted to make the Germans pay reparations the Americans saw it as a threat to major income.

WWI:
Before WWI America had no intention of getting involved in European affairs. During the Great War America got forced into the battle. When the war subsided, America's presence in Europe became more evident. When WWII happened we were in the heat much more quickly and after the war America was officially took the torch and lead the way for Europe through the United Nations. But the Soviets were an obstacle they did not plan on having to hop.

The Roaring 20's:
After WWI the U.S. went through many changes especially the way we viewed the world. Europe had fallen into a terrible depression and Soviet Russia especially needed support. The States Booming Economy put into act the Famine Act and helped Russia feed millions of people in need. The same helping attitude also created Declaration of Liberated Europe and caused Frustration between the Soviets and America.

Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal & The Great Depression:
FDR's New Deal Programs attempted to ease the strength of the great depression. Many believe that he was successful in doing so. Contrary to America, many parts of Europe never got out of the depression. Russia rebounded very well much like America did. And after the war had very powerful beliefs that Communism was the most reliable form of government. The Soviet Union even tried to encourage other countries to adopt the government. The fear of Communism in America waited to come out until the Yalta Conference.

Modern Significance
The responsibility of the U.S. government is still to prevent the expansion of communism while maintaining the peace between countries but the focus of modern crisis is staying out of a war.
In the Crisis in Crimea Many believe that Putin is trying to start another cold war. The Russian Government took charge of Crimea "overnight". After a conference involving President Barrack Obama the President stated "Europe and America are united in our support of the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian people. We're united in opposing a cost on Russia for its actions so far." the people of Ukraine and America don't believe he is doing enough in reaction to the aggressive Russian behavior. When the Cold war first began in Yalta there was a deal and the Soviets boke that deal and it led to decades of terror. The American Government's job is still to prevent the spread of communism while maintaining peace inside America and Russia, but the technique for doing so has been altered.
"...Every big treaty has within it the seeds of a future conflict."
